Poetry

Poetry is where I started. And it's always where I come back to. The ability to convey emotion in such a succinct form amazes me, and I find it a good way to build various writing skills. While, sure, stories and books are good writing exercises, there's something unique about writing something like a poem. Taking everything you want to say and get across in just twenty lines can be an incredible challenge, and it can also just be a fun way to relax and use skills that haven't been dusted off for a while.

In an abandoned dance studio, there’s music and dancing unheard and unseen by anyone. Whispers in the shadows laud the figure who spins around the room, her body translucent and flickering in the night. Nothing moves, yet everything moves around the room. Darkness and light intertwine and dance, casting the shadows of the world. The Shadow Dancer performs a dance that crosses the borders between the world and other surprising places within flickering shadows.

The Shadow Dancer knows the truth. Without the darkness, there can be no light. Without the light, there can be no darkness. Between them lies the shadow in which the Shadow Dancer twirls.

Enter the world of the Shadow Dancer and immerse yourself in 150 poems, living in the light, the dark, and the shadow.

The twisting paths of a poet’s mind lead to intriguing places; there can be little doubt of this. These places contain whispers of the writer’s soul. Some paths show desired sights; others uncover unforeseen knowledge and, at times, unwanted things. The shadows conceal unknown discoveries on well-lit paths through the poet’s mind. Travelers, beware: uncertain destinations await along these paths. Tread carefully. Becoming lost in the pages of the poet’s thoughts may be a very real danger to these travelers.

So, come along and visit this place of shadows. Here, there be dragons, monsters, truth, and more to enjoy. Fantasy, Reality, and Truths form one hundred and fifty poems by Beverly L. Anderson. The first path is one of fantasy with mythic beasts of yore and darkness that creeps into the very bone. Fairies may fly, and dragons may soar. The second path is one of reality and perhaps questions of what is and is not within that reality. Here, questions of existence and what the world shows us daily are spoken. And the final path is one of truths. These truths may be surprisingly uncomfortable or not the truth you expected. In any case, travel the paths at your own risk.

Open these pages and see if something draws you into the whispered shadows of the very soul.
