AI Witch Hunts
AI and the Problems with Witch Hunts
WRITINGAI

The anti-AI crowd is beginning to be as ridicilous as the pro-AI one. I’m against generative AI as much as the next creative who wants human created content, but this is getting incredibly awful out here.
We literally have people who are showing their photoshop layers for images and being told they’re faked by AI. Because here’s the thing: when someone is looking for something, they’re going to find it. Whether it exists or not.
Writers are trying to figure out how to prove they’ve written their works, and suggesting having multiple saves of the same documents. I’m AuDHD, you know what mutltiple saves means? I’m going to fuck up and redo work I already did because I’ve got the wrong damn file.
Ai is not good, absolutley. It’s damaging to the environment. It was trained on stolen IP. All of this is true. However, the fight about AI is having more casualties than the guilty.
AI can be useful. If I need a circle on an image filled in and don’t have a file with a toile pattern, maybe that’s what I choose to do, and I fill it in. Maybe I’m using a background remover that takes away certain elements but leaves others. Are these really the same as someone putting 100 words into a computer and generating an image they’re slapping on a book?
I say no. Just like for writing. I’m sorry, brainstorming is not the same as having AI write for you. This is where we see ideas form, not the writing itself.
And no, I’m not discounting the environmental impact of data centers by saying this. That’s an overarching topic and has to be addressed before any of the ways we can use AI as a TOOL are good for us.
There are dozens of ways the Author’s Guild have identified as ethical ways writers can use AI (https://authorsguild.org/resource/ai-best-practices-for-authors/) and that’s what I’m basing my thoughts on.
The accusations of AI are more harmful than anything to the movement to limit AI use. It only feeds amunition to those that want to force others to accept AI use in creativity.
But yeah.
